For years, zesty Tom Yum Gung soup has been a mainstay of Thai cooking. And now researchers are thinking it just might have cancer-fighting ingredients as well as good taste. “Tom Yum Gung is Thailand’s most favorite soup,” according to Chef Rolf Schmitz of the Regent Hotel’s Spice Market restaurant. “It’s a shrimp soup with herbal ingredients like coriander, lemon grass, lime leaves and even galangal roots.” Also called hot-and-sour soup, the dish often includes straw mushrooms and a variety of chilies.

A recent joint study by Thailand’s Kasetsart University and Japan’s Kyoto and Kinki Universities has found that the ingredients in Tom Yum Gung soup are 100 times more effective in inhibiting cancerous tumor growth than other foods. Scientists are seeking to extract the chemical compounds that are most effective from soup ingredients, said Suratwadee Jiwajindra of Kasetsart University. Research also is focusing on edible plants in the region. “The ratio of the cancer pattern in Asians, especially southeast Asians, is very low compared with the pattern in the European and Western countries,” Jiwajindra said. In fact, Thais have a much lower incidence of digestive tract cancers than people do in other countries.

Traditional Thai cuisine — famed for its heavy use of herbs and spices — has long been known to have health benefits, Jiwajindra said. And despite its spicy taste, Tom Yum Gung continues to be popular, said Schmitz, calling the soup “definitely the best seller if you look into the statistics.” Every month, the soup is “at the top of the charts,” he added. “A day, I’d say we are making 50-60 cups in a restaurant like the Spice Market,” said the chef.

In the 1990’s a news report, later titled the “French Paradox”, was brought to the public eye after researchers discovered that the French who live on a diet of cheese, butter, organ meats, eggs and other cholesterol laden food had a lower rate of heart attack than in America. The results as to why this was so were very surprising to many: moderate and steady consumption of wine. How is wine good for your health?

Many believe red wine is better for you than white wine, because that is what early studies found. Skin from red grapes contained a powerful antioxidant called resveratrol, which was transferred into red wine during manufacturing. However, nowadays manufacturers are altering their winemaking processes for both red and white wine to boost health benefits.

Some of the more recent studies conducted from around the world have shown that wine can be a very powerful agent in helping prevent heart and lung problems and even strokes! In 2002 the American Thoracic Society found that the antioxidants from white wine helped improve lung function while in the same year the William Harvey Research Institute found that polyphenols in red grape skins helped keep arteries open and lowered the risk of strokes. University of California at Davis discovered in 1995 that coronary heart disease was reduced and research conducted in 2004 at the University of Ferrara in Italy showed that the elderly who consumed moderate amounts of wine had healthier blood vessels than those who didn’t.

Aside from these benefits there are many others specific to men or women. For men, in 2004, the Worcester Medical Center in Massachusetts found that wine helped lower the risk of a heart attack for men with high blood pressure. The Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Australia in 2004 found that women who consumed wine had a lower risk of ovarian cancer and the Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology Unit, St. Thomas’ Hospital in London discovered wine helped with stronger bones.

The key however is moderation. What is “moderation”? Studies have said that “moderation” is considered to be one or two glasses a day. Drinking more than this can be bad for your health and cause more diseases than prevent them. Wine does have a rather high calorie content which can put on the pounds if not consumed in moderation. But aside from just weight gain you risk far more serious health problems such as kidney and liver disease with over consumption.

So wine drinkers raise your glasses for a toast to the benefits of a glass a day!

Some people seem to be cursed with frequent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). The most common treatments are for your doctor to prescribe a course of antibiotics, to be told to drink cranberry juice (or eat blueberries and unsweetened cranberries), or both. Instead of dealing with recurring problem of treating UTIs, why not try preventing them instead?

Here are a few tips to help stop UTIs before they start:

Drink water.

Drinking water is one of the best things we can do health-wise, regardless of our goals. A water intake of 48 to 64 oz. a day can aid in weight loss, help prevent illness, and keep our skin healthy and our bodies hydrated. As far as UTIs are concerned, water helps flush out your urinary system and wash out bacteria. Cranberry juice is a great form of prevention as well as treatment; research suggests that drinking one to three cups a day makes the urine more acidic, which can help prevent the growth of bacteria.

Take showers instead of baths.

Sitting in bath water, especially soapy bath water, can irritate your tissues. This can open the door to bacteria and make you more susceptible to infection. Also, perfumed bath products, bubble baths, and feminine hygiene sprays may also increase your risk of developing a UTI.

Wear cotton underwear.

Cotton underwear is more absorbent than underwear made of artificial fibers and is able to pull moisture away from your skin. Artificial fibers, such as nylon and polyester, trap moisture, creating a hospitable environment for bacteria, as well as yeast. This can promote infections.

It is important to remember that prevention is ALWAYS preferable to treatment, as overuse of antibiotics can render them useless or create a resistence within your system. By following good hygiene practices and keeping yourself hydrated, you’re on your way to ending your UTI issues forever.

There has been a long-standing belief in natural medicine that there are certain foods that provide more than just dietary value and are believed to have disease-fighting and healing properties. One of these foods that has been proven to be a way to fill up on antioxidants is the blueberry. In recent USDA studies blueberries been shown to be number one in antioxidant activity, as compared to 40 other fruits and vegetables and makes this humble fruit the ideal health supplement.

We normally do not think that health is related to economics other than with regard to the costs of medical care. But there is another more fundamental way money impacts our wellbeing. If you could not pay your bills or had to worry about where the next meal would come from, would you be thinking about health, or survival? When we are trying to stay alive moment-to-moment we don’t think about food choices, supplements, organic farming, animal welfare or environmental issues. Those considerations are a “luxury” dependent upon economic capability. But they are a luxury we must have if we are to live a reflective life and survive on planet Earth. Without a robust economy, you can pretty much forget about people being environmental, health conscious, or even civil to one another. In starving nations, war is endemic, disease rampant and the environment is only a raw material to be ravaged to hopefully live to the next day.

The emerging world economy will ultimately place great economic stress on the United States. It already has. Thousands of jobs are being lost to overseas companies employing workers requiring a fraction of the wages demanded here. People in America increasingly try to maintain a standard of living through debt. This is great for all the banks popping up on almost every street corner, but bad for the people. Just in the past year there have been almost two million personal bankruptcies declared.

To compete in the marketplace, companies must keep their costs down. If that means shifting manufacturing elsewhere, that’s what will be done. India, China and other Eastern rim countries are the beneficiaries of this shift in manufacturing and labor pool. While American workers are clamoring for things to return to the way they were with high wages and generous benefits, workers in developing countries are happy as can be having a job for five dollars a day.

This trend will not go away with “buy American” banners or political rhetoric about treaties, minimum wages and outsourcing. The global economy is here to stay and that will mean the American standard of living will retract and the developing world’s will improve. Expect a decline in the standard of living, falling wages and investment insecurity.

Government is not the solution, since it produces nothing but only takes. Government saps an economy, it does not create it. The more that government is hands off, the better the economic vitality. A robust private sector economy (environmentally responsible), on the other hand, is not the enemy as it is so often portrayed, but is critical to financial vitality.

Capitalism is not in itself a demon since it merely provides the mechanism for prosperity and with that the opportunity for a society to focus on matters of health and altruism. It works well if ambition and hard work, not merely greed, are its tools.

The inevitable decline of our standard of living is an inevitable and irreversible trend for the foreseeable future. It should concern us not because we want to see American super abundance continue, but because those who are unaware and get caught as casualties in this economic downturn will suffer in so many ways. The world is no longer business as usual. Good health is not just about diets, supplements, organic foods and aerobics. It’s also about being safe, like driving carefully, not standing on the top of a stepladder, wearing safety glasses when chipping stone…and working hard, keeping our financial house in order and supporting societal choices that do the same.

Life is not surety, and neither is our economy. Nevertheless, hard work and prudent management will never be replaced and is as close to security as we can ever get. It, not entitlements and guarantees, is what ultimately creates the financial footing we need for good health and a sustainable, better and more peaceful world.

Your health is undoubtedly your most valuable asset. So with that in mind how do you protect your health?

Yes you probably have health insurance to look after your health if you become ill and car insurance to take car of you should your health suffer as a result of a car accident. But isn’t that paying someone else to look after your health after things go wrong? A bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted? What are you doing, or, what should you be doing to look after your health right now?

Do you get regular health check ups? Do you exercise & eat all the right foods that are beneficial to your health? Do you use health care products such as health supplements? Do you smoke, drink or take drugs? Are you aware of how these habits affect your health?

I’m willing to bet that you make darn sure you look after your children’s health, making sure that they are not doing anything that is going to cause long term damage to their health? But who is watching your health? Who’s making sure you are not doing anything to damage your health?

Health is probably something we all take for granted & only realise how important our health is when we are ill or someone close to us is suffering from ill health. However if we all do nothing in regard to our health now, waiting until we begin to suffer from ill health & then trying to do something about it may be too late as we may have already done irreparable damage to our health. If you could do something now to prevent one of your assets diminishing, such as your bank balance, your home or your car would you? Yes of course you would, so what about your most valuable asset, your health?

Well it’s about time that someone took control of your health, and that someone is you! Take control of your health now and make sure that valuable asset, your health, is well and truly looked after. Here are some suggestions that might help you to look after your health:

Get regular health check ups. If you have a good health insurance these are probably insisted upon. After all we all give our cars regular “health” checks, isn’t our health more important than the health of our vehicles?

Make sure you eat a healthy diet. Even if you don’t need to loose weight the right diet can help to improve your health.

Take regular exercise. 30 minutes a day at least 5 days a week, even if it’s just a couple of 15 minute strolls, that’s not to great a chore to protect a valuable asset – your health.

If you smoke, stop now! This is probably the best thing you can and ever will do for the sake of your health.

Cut down on your alcohol intake. Stick to the recommended guidelines for sensible drinking – for your health’s sake.

When it comes to health issues, self diagnosis can be a dangerous thing and the medical professionals should always have the final say with regards to treatments. However, that doesn’t mean that someone should not educate themselves on health matters, and especially if the illness or condition in questions affects you or someone close to you. This is why it’s wise to keep updated by reading current health articles. Although it’s not sensible to take treatment into your own hands, you could always take your new findings to you doctor for his input and opinion on whatever it is you’ve read about that you think may help your case.

Mind you, it’s important to be careful when reading current health articles and it’s crucial to find a reliable source for information. Unfortunately, the World Wide Web has its fair share of misinformation as well as an abundance of accurate, useful reports and updated developments in the medical field. Another potential problem with reading health articles is that it can turn a few people into hypochondriacs, as some well written pieces can convince the reader thy have certain conditions which they don’t.

My son, bless his heart, was a victim of this with his young curious mind. He stumbled on some current health articles as he was doing a little online research about tropical Malaria for a school project. My wife and I noticed he was a little quiet for a few days but when asked if he was ok, he just shrugged his shoulders and said that he was fine. Eventually, it all got a bit much for the lad and after about a week of suffering in silence he decided to overcome his embarrassment and voice his concerns to us.

What happened was he’d come across some links on STD’s and after reading up on the symptoms of a few of these he was certain he was going to die a premature death. He was sure that he had signs of third stage syphilis, another conditions called chancroid, and something else even I can’t spell or pronounce. The poor lad is only 12 and is yet to have his first proper girlfriend, but even so, we had to take him to the family doctor before he could be reassured that he was a young, fit, and healthy young man with his whole life ahead of him. We have since moved his PC into the living room where we can keep an eye on the type of sites he visits,

But hypochondria aside, it is still a good idea for many folks to read current health articles whenever they have a need to keep updated on their or their loved ones illnesses. I have a very good friend of mine who developed progressive multiple sclerosis at just 39 years of age and he got real bad. He was just one step away from a wheel chair and had tried a multitude medications and combination medicines, but nothing seemed to be helping. It was painful to watch the poor guy getting worse and worse, and having a wife and young daughter made this cruel and seemingly unstoppable condition all the more sad.

Anyway, Elvis (a nickname from school days!), became a bit of an expert on his condition, and made sure he kept up with all the current health articles on MS from the experts around the world. One day, he discovered a drug that he thought might help him out in combination with a previous drug he had tried but failed. He approached his physician about this and he agreed that there was nothing to lose by trying.

Without any exaggeration, after two years of pain, discomfort and heading fast to becoming a full blown cripple, he got well within weeks. When I say well, I mean he’d gone from clutching onto sticks to running around like a kid on a mission. I have never in my life seen such a transformation in anyone and it’s all thanks to his commitment to keeping updated on progressive MS by reading all the current health articles he could get his hands on. I just hope and pray he doesn’t relapse, but touch wood; he’s been as fit as a fiddle for 18 months at the time of writing this article.

Exercise is the cheapest, most effective form of pain management anywhere. According the WebMD (link below), more than half of Americans suffer from chronic or recurrent pain, and nearly half (46%) of poll takers reported pain in the last two weeks. That doesn’t count the “usual minor annoyances,” says the ABCNews/USA Today/Stanford University Medical Center poll.

While exercise is the last thing you’d probably think to do when you’re in pain, the reality is that exercise is one of the best forms of pain management there is. You won’t want to get started exercising, but once you do you won’t give it up because you’ll love the pain relief you begin experiencing.

Just what is hurting anyway? Most commonly reported pain occurs in backs, knees, and the head (in the form of migraines). Legs and shoulders are also commonly reported sites for pain.

Living with pain affects quality of life: everything from income, hobbies, responsibilities, and relationships can be affected. Most people at least attempt to find a form of pain relief, but only just over half of people (59%) said they’d gotten at least a “good amount” of pain relief after consulting their doctor.

Most of my personal training clients had regular or recurrent pain somewhere on their body before they started exercising under my tuitilage. Every single one of them notes improvements in the level of pain they experience on a daily basis when they are consistent with their workout programs. In fact, many said that their body “told them” it was time to get back to their workouts after a hiatus because their old aches and pains came back.

Exercise is NOT a cure-all for all types of pain, and is no substitute for visiting a doctor or physical therapist if need be. However, exercise offers almost everyone some form of pain relief, even if it’s only temporary (however, evidence indicates that in many cases it is permanent as long as you keep up your workout routine). You see, when you work out your body releases a variety of hormones that eases tension in the muscles and increases the “feel-good” chemicals in the brain, not unlike many anti-depressant pills. However, exercise using the correct technique and program has NO side effect other than looking, feeling, and performing your best.

Would you like to finally be in control of your body fat level? Yes? Then read this lesson very carefully. The formula is revealed herein.

As one of the most important elements of the human body, water makes up approximately 70 percent of our muscles, and about 75 percent of our brain, playing a vital role in the proper functioning of the body, and making it an essential part of a healthy diet.

Drinking water also forces fat to be used as fuel, making it one of the main keys to success in shedding any extra pounds. And, without adequate water, kidneys are unable to function properly – prompting the liver to pick up the slack. This causes additional problems for dieters because the liver cannot properly metabolize stored fat as energy, resulting in more fat being stored in the body.

Furthermore, water effectively suppresses appetites, aids in proper digestion, and acts as one of the vehicles for circulating nutrients and oxygen through the body, as well as assisting the body in eliminating waste. Water lubricates joints, protects organs, helps maintain a normal body temperature, and is absolutely Necessary for exercise, and even day-to-day performance.

With this in mind, it’s easy to understand why drinking enough water – a minimum of TEN, 8-ounce glasses a day, every day – is perhaps the single most important step in determining diet and fitness success. (((a more detailed formula for determining the exact amount of water your particular body needs each and every day to function at it’s best can be found on page 63 of Maximize Your Metabolism – get it now at: http://www.maximizeyourmetabolism.com/?ezine

However, because the average body loses 8 to 12 cups of water a day, this can be a challenge. Start by trying to drink 10 glasses each day, and work up to one full gallon per day.

Sound tough? Don’t get discouraged. With the following suggestions, you’ll find drinking enough water is not hard, and will be well worth the initial effort by quickly bringing into your life all the positive changes you’re looking for including fat loss, healthier skin/hair and nails, increased energy and alertness, and far more.

Start tomorrow by drinking a glass of water when you wake up. For a nice morning pick me up you might even add a few tablespoons of lemon juice and a small pinch of cayenne pepper to your first glass. Then prepare a large water bottle to take with you on your drive to work or to school. You can even try putting the bottle in the freezer the night before, and filling it with water right before you leave to start your day. This keeps the water cooler longer, and ensures it will be a good drinking temperature during your morning commute.

Drink a glass of water in between every meal, and a glass in the evening, but not to close to bedtime. Take a filled water bottle with you wherever you go. This makes getting the water you need easy, and ensures you will look better (and feel better). At work, keep your water bottle filled and with you at your desk. Reach for it instead of unnecessary, high-sugar, high-fat snacks. Sip on it all day, adding ice cubes and additional water as needed.

Next, change from caffeinated coffee, tea and soda to decaffeinated alternatives. Caffeine depletes your water supply, and can make it difficult for your body to get all the water it needs. For every caffeinated beverage you drink, drink an additional glass of water.

This small step can make a big difference.

Keep in mind that exercise, hot weather, low humidity, altitude, a high-fiber diet, and consumption of caffeine and alcoholic beverages all increase your daily water loss. During these times, take extra steps to ensure you offset the increased water loss with increased water consumption.

Smoking or non-smoking which would you prefer? You’re probably now wondering what I’m on about… Of course I know you’d never think about lighting up and smoking a cigarette in church but have you ever considered the health risk of lit candles and incense in your church or place of worship.

I didn’t either until I came across an article that opened my eyes to it. Did you know that that the air in some churches can be a bigger health risk to you than standing at the side of a motorway or freeway and breathing in the toxins (carcinogenic polycyclic hydrocarbons) of 45,000 vehicles?

No! That’s not a typing error it really was that high!

The study was done by a university in Europe who also found that the air in some churches also contained “tiny solid pollutants” at levels which were up to 20 times over the legal European limits. These solid pollutants consisted of soot and other toxic chemicals given off as the candles were burned down. These pollutants could affect people suffering from lung problems like asthma and bronchitis. The times of the year with the most pollution were found to the major holidays like Christmas and Easter because of the higher number of candles burned.

Does this sound familiar to you? After getting through a long day of work, engaging in obligatory social activities and then doing the upkeep on your house or apartment you may feel as if every last second of your time and every last drop of your energy have been spent.

By that point, you just want to collapse on the floor, exhausted. Then you wake up and have to do it all over again the next day.

Fortunately, there is help. You just need to know about an amazing exercise and self improvement system. This may be the easiest exercise to learn that you have ever seen. You’ll feel wonderful and energized afterwards, unlike ordinary workouts. Its called Falun Dafa.

I attribute the disappearance of my back pain to Falun Dafa. Another thing I feel that it did for me personally was give me the energy to get things done. You may also be excited to learn that it is something you can implement in your life very easily, without a lot of effort.

What you’ll want to do is visit this website: http://falundafa.org You’ll want to get the book, Zhuan Falun, and exercise instruction videos. Both are available for free download. You’ll want to read the book to gain the full benefits of this self improvement system.

Now, you may be thinking that it might not be easy to learn all the ins and outs of these 5 sets of simple, energizing exercises just from a video.

You’ll find the solution for that on the very same website. There is a volunteer instructor list. Scan it for your city or one near you. The list covers most major cities around the world and even many smaller cities.

The best part is that none of these volunteers will accept a penny of your money. They will show you these exercises free of charge and with no strings attached.

The reason they will do this is because they have also received amazing results from this practice. For this reason, they are willing to take their own time to show you how to do it at no cost to you.

So, what are you waiting for? Go over to that website and get started on what might be the most amazing and beneficial treasure you have ever uncovered in this lifetime. Discover for yourself an incredible wellspring of health and energy.
